My Healing Path—Called to Heal Plants, Pets, People, and the Planet
Growing up on a family farm in the 1950’s, our doors were never locked. I felt safe and loved by parents and community. Hard work, mentoring and education paved the way for me to earn degrees in veterinary medicine, theology and nutrition. I was the first in our family of nine to achieve advanced education and opportunities. It was as if whatever I dreamed was possible…including the twelve years I spent doing community development in the rainforests of a third-world country. The “good old days!”
But my path to healing truly began with the Word of God. It all started in Genesis:
“Then God said, Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over ALL the earth and over every creeping thing that that creeps on the earth….Then the LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to tend and keep it.” Genesis 1:26-28, 2:15
Growing up on an organic family farm, these scriptures spoke to me of stewardship, conservation, creativity, blessing and, above all, love of the land.
As I experienced farm life and grew in my understanding of God’s Word, I learned that stewardship of God’s creation is the key to health. Consider this insight from John 3:16 from the Greek NT: “For God so loved (“agape”: passionately loved) the creation (“cosmos”: all living things) that He Gave….” “All living things”? This obviously includes the beasts of the field, fruit trees, flowers, mosquitos, birds, bacteria, compost piles, and…..the “crown” of creation: mankind! Christ died to save ALL creation, you ask? Yes!
Let’s build on this. Paul, in Hebrews 2:6-8, rephrases Genesis and Psalms 8 as follows: “What is man that You would even think about him, or care about Adam’s race. You made him lower than the angels for a little while. You placed Your glory and honor upon his head as a crown. And You have given him dominion over the works of Your hands. For You have placed everything under his authority.” (Hebrews 2:6-8)
My calling as a physician and healer, is to practice, demonstrate, live and TEACH God’s eternal principles of Stewardship over ALL living things. In my case, this concept gradually evolved from seed to fruit. First, on our family farm–the seed. Second, as a veterinarian–the plant. Third, in seminary and the mission field–the flower. Fourth, as an author and teacher of eternal Kingdom principles in my family, office and writings–the fruit.
At each level along my path, it took time to germinate and gain traction. Along the way, my breakthroughs developed as I began to “believe” deeply. Also, I was mentored (thankfully) by significant people and books, magazines, teaching and preaching continued to validate the science of healing God was revealing to me.
The Lord taught me about nature, His design, and the health hidden in the earth (including our bodies). I also learned that others who felt called to heal had different ideas. Many who are drawn to healing and medicine bonded themselves to the world system and religion of pharmakia: the healing philosophy of chemicals and drugs.
But for me, God instilled Shalom peace in all aspects of my calling as a healer. This peace was nurtured through prayer and relationship in the garden of my devotional life and through the encouragement of other believers.
The fruit of God’s design in my unique calling began to ripen as I practiced healing. Animals regained health when they were fading under orthodoxy. Plants became healthier and more fruitful. Increasingly, the testimony of family, friends and clients proved I was on the right path.
Eventually, I shared much of my journey in my three published books. The first is titled: WE DON’T DIE: WE KILL OURSELVES: Our Foods Are Killing Us! Would you agree?
The Future of Health
I love the healing path the LORD God has set before me. I continue to listening to Him every day. LORD “teach” me and provide my “food/revelation/story/miracle” bread for today. I am still learning and still excited about my calling as a healer and the future of health.
God designed me, you, and our planet with everything we need for complete healing in relationship with Him. Sadly, believers are sometimes the most resistant to inviting God into healing. My biggest challenge and burden has been facing generational traditions that discredit God as healer and rely solely on clinical medicine and pharmacology. Significantly there is a move in orthodox and holistic medicine that academia has failed. Professionals exude head knowledge. In our world “burn out” is endemic. Suicides are increasing at a disturbing rate. Overwhelmed, millions are nutritionally, emotionally and spiritually caught in an inevitable trap. One trap is treating illness by cookie cutter knowledge. As one professor explained: We treat the lab test, not the patient. One graduation commencement speaker explained: “Half of what you were taught is wrong. Unfortunately we do not know which half!” This, regrettably, typifies the failing ivory tower healing model. This is the world I was educated in. But there is evidence the dry bones are rattling and coming together.
There are awesome answers at hand. As we step back into the original meaning of “uni-versity”, it was unity within diversity. In other words, each subject was understood as part of a whole. In that historical setting theology was the “queen” of the sciences. In 17th century America, doctors, lawyers, scientists, botanists and educators were trained in the scriptures as normal and mandatory. This was holistic education. Back to the basics, right?
As one called to heal, what is my real message? Stewardship of our creation (which includes plants, pets, people and the planet) yields health by design. A wise and related exhortation is: “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”
A new wind is blowing in field of health. I am encouraged by God’s passion for health and raising up healers and I hope you are too. Our plants, pets, people, and the planet needs it (Romans 8).
